To Enroll in Canine Good Citizen class:
******Please note, we do not have any classes scheduled to run however testing can always happen without classes. Please contact Amber for more details.***
This is a next steps Adult Training class for those interested in Canine Good Citizen with the testing and for Puppy graduates looking to continue training but not interested in the testing! Passing the CGC test is also required to do therapy dog training with most organization across the USA.
What is the Canine Good Citizen Program (CGC)?
The CGC stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. It is also the first step to becoming a therapy dog.
Please note: A dog who passes the Canine Good Citizen test does *not* receive the same rights as a Therapy Dog or Service Dog. Those certifications require additional training & testing.
All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. The test covers:
Test 1: Accepting a friendly stranger
Test 2: Sitting politely for petting
Test 3: Appearance and grooming
Test 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
Test 5: Walking through a crowd
Test 6: Sit and down on command and Staying in place
Test 7: Coming when called
Test 8: Reaction to another dog
Test 9: Reaction to distraction
Test 10: Supervised separation
We are also Therapy Dog Evaluators!
What is S.T.A.R. Puppy?
Animal Intuitions offers two puppy classes: Puppy Level 1 (4 weeks long) & Puppy Level 2 (6-weeks long). The AKC requires the puppy to have attended the 6-week course to take the test. The 4-week course does not meet the AKC’s requirements for testing. If the puppy is younger than 16 weeks, the focus of the puppy parent needs to be socialization per the guidelines of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. The STAR Puppy test is optional & fun but socialization is a life skill requirement for well rounded adult dogs.
This is an optional test offered at the end of Puppy Level 2 (ages 5-11 months). Students are not required to take the S.T.A.R. Puppy test after completion of the 6 week course. PRE-REQUISITE: To enroll in Puppy Level 2, the puppy must be 5 months old or have completed Puppy Level 1. Puppy Level 2 is not suitable for puppies younger than 5 months that have not completed Level 1.
The pet parent can then send in their completed test results to the AKC and receive the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Medal (for display or memento purposes; not suitable as a collar tag). You and your puppy will be listed in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records. In addition, so that you can continue learning, you’ll receive the AKC AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy package.
Please note: A puppy who passes the S.T.A.R. Puppy test will still have to take the CGC test as an adult to be considered a Canine Good Citizen.
